Autumn Aches and Pains – Why Your Body May Feel Different as the Seasons Change
As we move into autumn, many people notice that their muscles and joints can start to feel a little stiffer or more uncomfortable. The cooler weather, changes in our daily routines and becoming less active can all have an effect on how our bodies feel.
At Back to Normal Chiropractic Clinic in Plymouth, I often see people who have started to notice increased stiffness in their back, neck or other joints as the seasons change.
Why can autumn make us feel stiffer?
When the weather gets cooler, we can naturally become less active. We may spend more time indoors, sit for longer periods and do less walking or exercise. This can lead to muscles and joints feeling tighter and less mobile.
People can also be affected by changes in their usual routine. Perhaps the summer involved more walking and outdoor activities, while autumn brings more sitting at a desk, driving or relaxing at home.
Don't ignore persistent pain
A little stiffness after being less active is usually nothing to worry about, but persistent or worsening pain shouldn't simply be put down to the colder weather.
If you have ongoing back, neck or joint pain, it is worth getting it assessed so that you can understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and what you can do to help yourself.
Keep moving
One of the simplest things you can do as we head into autumn is to keep moving. Regular walking, gentle exercises and changing position regularly can all help to prevent your body becoming too stiff.
You don't necessarily need to do anything strenuous. A short walk each day and regular movement throughout the day can make a difference.
If you are already experiencing pain, however, it is sensible to choose activities that are appropriate for you rather than trying to push through significant discomfort.
