July Wellness: Enjoy the Summer While Looking After Your Spine

July is a wonderful time to enjoy everything that Plymouth has to offer. Whether you're walking along the Hoe, spending time at the beach, gardening, or taking family holidays, the warmer weather encourages us all to be more active.
While being active is excellent for our health, it's also the time of year when I often see patients with back, neck and joint discomfort caused by doing a little too much, too quickly. Long days in the garden, carrying heavy luggage, paddleboarding, or even spending hours relaxing on a sun lounger can all place unexpected strain on the body.
A few simple steps can help keep you moving comfortably this summer:
Warm up before gardening, walking or sporting activities.
Lift carefully by bending your knees rather than your back.
Change position regularly if you're driving long distances or sitting outside for extended periods.
Stay well hydrated, particularly during warmer weather, as dehydration can contribute to muscle stiffness and fatigue. For most people, drinking water regularly is all that's needed to stay hydrated during hot weather.
Listen to your body. Persistent pain is not something you should simply put up with.
One of the things I enjoy most about being an independent McTimoney chiropractor is getting to know my patients over many years. Every person is different, and treatment should always be tailored to the individual. The McTimoney technique uses gentle and precise adjustments that aim to improve joint.
