Looking After Your Back and Joints During the June Heatwave

With the recent hot weather in Plymouth, many of us are enjoying getting out in the sunshine, spending more time in the garden, walking more, or making the most of the coast. But while the warmer weather can lift our mood, it can also place extra strain on the body if we’re not careful.

During a heatwave, dehydration can affect muscles and joints more than people realise. When we don’t drink enough water, muscles can become tighter, fatigue sets in more quickly, and existing aches and pains may feel worse. Gardening, carrying shopping, long walks, and even sleeping badly in the heat can all aggravate back pain, neck tension, and joint stiffness.

As a McTimoney chiropractor here in Plymouth, I often remind patients that small things can make a big difference in hot weather. Try to keep hydrated throughout the day, avoid overdoing physical jobs in the midday heat, and take regular breaks if you’re bending, lifting, or spending time in the garden. Gentle stretching and keeping mobile can also help prevent stiffness from building up.

If the heat has left you feeling sore, stiff, or out of balance, chiropractic treatment may help to ease discomfort and improve mobility. McTimoney chiropractic uses gentle, precise adjustments designed to support the body’s natural alignment and function.
